What we love
This cosy romantic cottage is conveniently situated for exploring both the east and west coast of Scotland and all there is in between.
Thistle Cottage occupies the ground floor of a traditional 19th-century stone cottage. Overlooking the spectacular Kyle of Sutherland, it enjoys lovely views across these superb waters, the confluence of four famous salmon rivers, with the Sutherland hills beyond. The cottage is conveniently situated on the A836, which can be busy at times, and close to the centre of the village with plenty of amenities within a short walk. The living room has a warm welcoming atmosphere with the original solid wood flooring adding to the traditional ambience. The kitchen/dining room is small but well-equipped for two guests, and provides pretty views across the water. At the rear of the apartment is a kingsize double bedroom, with patio doors opening onto a gravelled area. Adjoining the bedroom is a bright, modern bathroom with bath and shower over.
The immediate area is home to an incredible array of wildlife such as resident otters, a variety of birds including visiting osprey, whooper swans, golden eagles, buzzards and deer. The area is also renowned for its outdoor pursuits. Spectacular mountain bike trails on the edge of the village offer easy routes for beginners, as well as extremely challenging ones for experienced riders, and all will appreciate the amazing views from the top. Golfing enthusiasts are spoilt for choice. The village has its own 9-hole course, and Royal Dornoch, Tain, Golspie and Brora are all easily accessible. The historic village of Dornoch is well worth a visit with its beautiful 13th-century cathedral, a variety of unusual shops and a superb, award-winning sandy beach, all just 10 minutes drive away.
Thistle Cottage is situated on the route across to the west coast, which is truly spectacular. Breathtaking mountains are interspersed with lochs and rivers before reaching the crystal clear waters and the sandy bays of the Atlantic coastline. From Bonar Bridge, it is also easy to travel further north to explore the wild, rugged seascapes of Caithness, whilst heading south, Inverness is just 40 minutes drive away. Bonar Bridge has excellent local facilities, including a bakery, butcher, village store, café, pubs and restaurant, all within a few steps. Fishing is second to none, with 14 miles of some of the most prolific salmon rivers, available by day ticket to visitors. There are also some lovely hill lochs for trout, and sea fishing is also a popular pastime. Beach 12 miles. Shop 100 yards, pub 80 yards and restaurant 150 yards.
